I’ve been fascinated lately by movies filmed in New York, and seeing what the city looked like in decades past, now that I can recognize more of the neighborhoods and streets. It doesn’t matter if the movies are good — I’ll watch a little of them, even bad 80’s movies like Desperately Seeking Susan. You might come across a really interesting shot, like this one of three old musicians playing in the Magic Club, which looks like it could be from a David Lynch film. Turns out these three men, all born in 1915, have had amazing careers — Marty Gold, the pianist, was a prolific composer, saxophonist Alvy West was a bandleader for Andy Williams in the early days of TV, and Henry Adler, the drummer, is a revered percussion teacher whose pupils included Buddy Rich. I’d love to know how they came to be cast in the movie.
